For decades, silicone tubing has become an increasingly popular choice for peristaltic pumps in the medical, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries around the world. Many industries that used to rely on stainless steel fluid pipes have begun to turn a lot of silicone tubes for the simple reason.
First, silicone tubing provides greater safety for equipment, personnel and customers. Silicone tubing has greater resistance to impregnation compared to alternative tubing options, preventing plasticizers or other additives from escaping and causing toxicological problems. In addition, the silicone tube is very flexible, anti-kink and tear resistant, making it an ideal partner for any peristaltic pumping system.
The two common silicone tubes used in pump systems are peroxide cured tubes and platinum cured tubes. While these two types of tubing have been a popular choice for the past few decades, platinum-cured silicone tubing has become the industry of choice.
Why choose a platinum curing tube?
Both pipe types are superior to the old pipe systems because they are more reliable for use in peristaltic pumps in industries that require high purity. While both curing methods for silicone tubing have benefited a variety of industries, in recent years platinum curtailing has gained advantages in industries where high purity is particularly important.
The platinum curing process involves a combination of two components to complete the curing process. Platinum cure systems, also known as addition cures, typically use a vinyl functional polymer in combination with a platinum catalyst to cure the silicone tube. The main benefit of the process itself is the lack of by-products of the combination of ingredients during the curing process. The result is that the silicone tube has little or no by-products in the polymer that can penetrate into the liquid flowing through the tube.
In addition to chemistry, the platinum curing process provides consistent finished products over and over again. It is important that the platinum cured silicone tubing has a clear finish compared to a more opaque coating on the peroxide cured tube. Although the consistency and appearance of the platinum tube is advantageous, the performance characteristics are more critical.
Platinum-cured silicone products offer higher tensile strength, elongation and tear strength, all of which extend the life of the product. In addition, platinum cured products have durability such as durability in a wide operating temperature range of -80 degrees Fahrenheit to 420 degrees Fahrenheit, hardness selection of 20 to 80 Shore A, biocompatibility and high dielectric strength.
For these reasons, platinum curing tubes are especially important in the medical and pharmaceutical industries. For example, many medical device manufacturers use this type of silicone tubing when they need to be in contact with tissue and body fluids for extended periods of time.
Choice is not always clear
Silicone tubing is highly flexible and is ideal for aseptic fluid delivery, peristaltic pumping and filling operations. However, although the finished product of the platinum curing process may be clear, it is not always clear which type of pipe is used.
